Bio
A doctor of osteopathic medicine, Hector López has been dedicated to his patients and his community since 1982. He is board certified in family practice and osteopathic manipulative medicine.
Born and raised in a family of farm laborers in Chihuahua, Mexico, Dr. López became fluent in English and earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University in 1977. He then attended Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) at The University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) at Fort Worth. Dr. López completed his residency at Doctors Hospital in Columbus, OH. He works as an associate clinical professor in the Department of Family Practice at UNTHSC Fort Worth/TCOM.
Dr. López is an award-winning doctor whose work is devoted to patients of all backgrounds, especially those in marginalized communities. In 1984, he founded the Community Medical Clinic to serve El Paso’s underserved patient population. In 1992, he was awarded Doctor of the Year by the Texas College of Family Physicians (TAFP). He was bestowed the title of Texas Family Physician of the Year in 2001 by the American College of Family Physicians. And from 2004 to 2005, he was the first Latino to serve as president of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association. During his tenure with the organization, he created a publication with medical terms and phrases to improve communication between healthcare providers and their Spanish-speaking patients. He has also held numerous additional leadership positions with organizations that work to resolve healthcare disparity.
