Helping COPD Caregivers Support Their Loved Ones

FiesingerTroy_MD

As a caregiver, you play a vital role in assisting those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), helping manage their day-to-day needs and providing invaluable support in navigating the challenges posed by this chronic condition. That is why Village Medical™ is proud to partner with the COPD Foundation to better prepare you as caregivers to help your loved ones with COPD live a more fulfilling life. We find this important information to share as the number of caregivers in the U.S. continues to rise as one in five Americans fulfill a caregiver position as of 2020, a nearly 22% increase since 2015.

As part of this effort, we’ve launched a new COPD Caregiver Packet. It is an educational resource designed to give you the information, advice and support you need to better care for yourself and your loved ones with COPD.

Why Knowing More About COPD Matters

COPD is a term used to describe chronic lung diseases including emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. Chronic conditions are often complicated. Better understanding these conditions can help you feel more comfortable guiding your loved one to follow their primary care doctor or advanced practice providers’* (APP) instructions, including:

  • Managing their symptoms
  • Sticking to their medication schedule
  • Exercising regularly
  • Staying up to date on vaccines

Caregiving Can Be Both a Challenging and Rewarding Experience

Being a caregiver and helping your loved one take care of their health is one of the most important things you can do, but it can also be exhausting and stressful. To help take care of yourself and prevent caregiving from becoming too overwhelming, don’t hesitate to ask for support from family, friends, or a medical professional. Talking about your experience and checking in with your own primary care doctor or APP will allow you to be the best caregiver you can be while maintaining your own good mental and physical health.
