How Pharmacists Help You Stay Healthy

When you think of your pharmacist, what comes to mind? For many, they immediately think of the person behind the counter who prepares their prescription medicine. While that is part of their job, it’s only a small piece of what a pharmacist does, especially for older adults and those who manage multiple medications and chronic health conditions.

As part of Pharmacy Week, we want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the important role pharmacists play in keeping you and your communities healthy. It is also a great time to understand how your pharmacist can support your health far beyond simply filling prescriptions.

How your pharmacist keeps you safe

Your pharmacist is experienced in medications and medication management, and their most critical role is making sure your prescriptions are safe and effective for you. Here’s a look at what happens behind the counter:

  • They double-check everything. Before you get your medicine, your pharmacist confirms it’s the right drug and dose for your condition, age and health history.
  • They look for interactions. It’s common to see different doctors who might not know what other medications you've been prescribed. Your pharmacist acts as a central checkpoint, reviewing your entire medication list to spot potential problems like duplicate therapies or harmful drug interactions. For example, they can warn you if a new medication might make you dizzy or sleepy, which might increase your risk of falls.
  • They prevent mistakes. This careful review helps prevent dangerous side effects and can even keep you out of the hospital.

Your resource for medication questions

Starting a new medication or taking multiple pills can be confusing. Your pharmacist is one of your most accessible healthcare resources, available to answer your questions without an appointment. They can help to explain:

  • How and when to take your medicines.
  • If you need to take them with or without food.
  • What to do if you miss a dose.
  • Common side effects to watch for.

This personalized counseling will help you feel more confident in managing your health, taking your medications and sticking to your treatment plan.

Partner on your healthcare team

Pharmacists work closely with your doctors and advanced practice providers* (APP) to make sure your care is coordinated. If they spot a potential issue—like a new prescription that conflicts with an existing one—they will contact your doctor or APP to suggest a safer alternative. This collaboration is a key part of keeping your treatment plan safe, effective and consistent.

Vaccines and preventive care

Pharmacists are also key players in helping you stay healthy through preventive measures, such as vaccinations. You can get many of your vaccines at your local pharmacy, often without a prescription. A few vaccines available through your pharmacist include:

Staying current on your immunizations is one of the best ways for everyone, especially older adults or those with chronic conditions, to protect themselves from serious infections.

Pharmacists do much more than just count pills and distribute them. They are your medication experts, safety advocates, and partners in care. They can help you avoid problems, stay on track with your treatment, and feel more in control of your health.

During Pharmacy Week, take a moment to appreciate the pharmacist in your life, and don’t hesitate to ask them questions, they’re here to help you feel better, stay healthier and live well.
